Perennial Wheatgrass - Thinopyrum intermedium
Very long-lived medium-tall Perennial wheatgrass from the Poaceae family. Will get to 6 or 8 feet tall. Root systems can get down to 30 feet! Still in grass family. The Land Institute is growing something like this in a breeding program to make a perennial wheat they call Kernza.
240 days to set seed and then sets seed every year after that in the 8th or 9th month. We planted and irrigated in November so that they were establishing during the cool rainy season in central California. Ours have been growing nicely for 12 years.
Depth 1/8 to ¼ inch. Keep moist. Will emerge in 10 to 14 days.Spacing 30” in all directions. Continues to spread, will overtake weeds that can grow in the shade of this plant.
Was previously known as eletrigia and then centoelemus before intermedium.
