Amole - Soap Plant - Chlorogalum pomeridianum
Amole is the Chumash name for this multi-functional plant ally.
In the lily family, takes about 300 days to mature from seed. Start in Nov/Dec will be producing by August. Sow at depth ¼ inch. Keep soil moist but not wet. Space every 1" or so. Thin to best plants 12 or 18 inches. Emerge in 2-3 weeks. Nightblooming or late afternoon blooming. Looks like a lily. Closes in the morning. Then sets the seed pod. Bulbs were used to kill fish by decreasing oxygen. Also the bulb can be crushed, smashed, strained and used as soap or conditioner/shampoo. Starchy roots can be skinned, sliced and boiled or baked, then eaten like a potato. Long strap leaves can be used for basket weaving. Long-lived perennial. Ours are 10 or 12 years old.
